The town our calendar is built around
Rockville is the seat of Parke County, a town of roughly 2,600 people that spends fifty-one weeks of the year being a quiet county seat and one week being one of the busiest places in Indiana. The Parke County Covered Bridge Festival has been headquartered in downtown Rockville since 1957. It runs ten days beginning the second Friday in October, it is the largest festival in the state, and it draws more than two million people to a county that ordinarily holds about seventeen thousand.
If you have never planned around it, that number is hard to internalize. Every church lot, farm field, fairground and vendor row in the county needs restrooms simultaneously, for ten consecutive days, serviced daily. It is the single biggest logistical event in our year and it is why our fleet is the size it is. Booking for that window closes early. Not a few weeks early. Months.
The rest of the year, Rockville work looks like anywhere else in the county: septic tanks on rural routes outside town, units for graduation parties and auctions, construction toilets on county road and building projects, and the occasional call from somebody whose main line finally gave up.
What we actually know about working here
- The Covered Bridge Festival has run out of downtown Rockville since 1957, spans ten days from the second Friday in October, and is attended by more than two million people. It is the largest festival in Indiana. coveredbridges.com
- Parke County holds 31 covered bridges, which is what the festival exists to show off and why traffic disperses across the whole county rather than concentrating in one place. coveredbridges.com
- Rockville's population is roughly 2,617 and it is the Parke County seat. worldpopulationreview.com
- Raccoon State Recreation Area sits on Cecil M. Harden Lake, a 2,060-acre federal flood control reservoir east of town, with over 300 campsites, a swimming beach, ten picnic shelters and five boat ramps. in.gov/dnr
Raccoon Lake and the summer side of Rockville
East of Rockville, Cecil M. Harden Lake, which almost nobody local calls anything but Raccoon Lake, changes what our summer looks like. The state recreation area there has its own modern facilities, but the private ground around the lake does not. Cabins, lake houses and camps on the perimeter run on their own septic systems, and a septic tank at a lake property that sits empty nine months a year then hosts fifteen people over a Fourth of July weekend behaves very differently than one serving a household of three year-round.
If you own something out that way, the practical advice is to have it pumped in spring rather than after the season. A tank going into a heavy-use summer with three years of sludge in it is the one that backs up in August with a houseful of people in it.

Coverage around Rockville
Rockville proper (ZIP 47872) plus the rural routes running out toward Bloomingdale, Catlin, Mecca and the Raccoon Lake perimeter. If you are on a county road east of US 41 and north of US 36, you are inside our normal run.
Nearby towns we also cover: Bloomingdale, Montezuma, plus Rosedale, Mecca and Marshall as part of our regular Parke County coverage.
Booking around the festival
One piece of practical advice we give every Rockville customer, and it costs us nothing to say. If your event, wedding, family reunion or job site falls anywhere in Parke County during the second or third week of October, book restrooms before summer. Everyone in the county needs units at the same time, there are a finite number of them, and we would rather turn you toward a plan that works than take a booking we cannot honor. Outside that window, Rockville is a ten-minute run and we can usually be there the same week you call.
